While I still call Sydney home, I have lived in Manhattan on-and-off here-and-there since 1999 and I must say I've been pretty lucky with the places I've had the pleasure of staying.
Recently it came time once again to move and I turned to the usual suspect Craigslist. Now Craigslist is fine and dandy but actually finding an apartment in NYC on Craigslist requires a special kind of charmed luck and more patience than I have for such things. So while getting annoyed trying to find an apartment I remembered something I'd hit a while back called Yahoo Pipes.
In short, Yahoo Pipes allows you to take a bunch of web data sources and blender them together using a fancy web GUI to create some other form of useful output. It turns out this is just what I needed to make my Manhattan apartment hunt easier.
To really appreciate the power of Yahoo Pipes you'll need to create yourself a YahooID and get logged in, this way you can view the source "wires and connections" that comprise various pipes.
I've created and used the Yahoo Pipes below in the past which have greatly helped me zero in on what I was looking for right away.
- Apartments - Short Term - Lower Manhattan
- Apartments - Short Term - Brooklyn Heights
- Rooms & Shares - Lower Manhattan
Part of the power of Yahoo Pipes is that you can create your output in a wide range of formats, as such I've created a bunch of pre-cooked RSS feeds available in the menu on the right herewith.
Enjoy.
