OK, this is now months after the fact but I've been meaning to finish off the blog entries from NYC to SF for a while now. The ride from the Grand Canyon was memorable for one reason, it was hot, really hot. Of course I was fully expecting it to be hot and I was mentally prepared for it but when the heat actually came on it was still quite a shock.
To deal with the heat I was drenching my tee shirt in water putting it on and then putting my leathers on over the top. This technique worked really very very well because the leathers offered protection from the sun while the wet tee shirt was slowly evaporating water and thus nice and cool when riding along. The problems began as I approached the Hoover Dam since the traffic was bumper to bumper and very very slow which meant I did not have much air passing around me which in turn meant my tee shirt cooling trick was not working and I was just getting hot. My camel pack backpack was essential at this point.
Once I made it past the Hoover Dam getting myself into Vegas proper was easy but the heat really hit hard, I caught my thermometer up at 49C (120F) at one point while sitting at the lights on the Vegas Strip sitting on a moto pumping out heat with leathers on! I damn near passed out so pulled into an In-N-Out-Burger joint to cool off a while.
Anyway, I got stuck in Vegas a few days enjoying myself :)
