30 July 2009 :: Ouray to Grand Canyon

So I got I bit slack about updating my blog at the end of July. Keeping the updates going on the road is hard because by the end of the day you're physically and mentally exhausted.

The ride out of Ouray to Grand Canyon was yet another gem. The road from Ouray to Durango consists of never ending switchbacks - seriously I was riding for hours on these beautiful banked lefts and rights up and over the mountains - it was the first time I really saw many sportsbikes.

Shortly outside Durango I started to see dry desert country for the first time, the only surprise being that I'd not seen such terrain sooner on my trip, I'd expected to see more dry country across Kansas State. I'd been told in Ouray that the roads after Durango are all Indian reservations and that one needs to be careful about speeding in those areas since traffic enforcement can be less forgiving there. My GPS clearly displayed the reservations and let me tell you, the reservations are BIG, 100's of miles across infact and all very dry wild country.

I made my obligatory stop at the four corners of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona took a photo and carried on to the south side of the Grand Canyon. Somewhere along this part of the ride I took my favourite photo of the whole journey, my bike with these two great big mounds of desert rock in the background - great stuff.

The Grand Canyon was big, really big and it took me a while to really grasp how large the whole area really is -- little surprise it is considered to be one of the great wonders of the natural world.

I ended up camping at the Grand Canyon which was great the only thing lacking out there is a good source of firewood!
