29 July 2009 :: Ouray, Mountains and Ouray

If you ever have a chance to pass through he Rocky Mountain region in the summer you must make time to visit Ouray. Ouray, known as the Switzerland of America, is nestled between two large mountains and fun twisty roads that lead in and out of the area which alone would be enough reason to pass through but on top of this there's great food, good bars and loads of outdoor activity stuff to do, but I digress...

I met Kat in Ouray who enthusiasticly announced to me that she was going to take her friends 125 up the mountain the following day. Within a few minutes we were making plans to ride up Imogene Pass the next day. That ride, that day, was far and away the best ride I've had the whole journey. The pass is the second highest vehicle road in Colorado (~13,200ft) and carries warnings stating the road is for 4x4 vehicles only but the views, the terrain and the roads really made for a bang load of fun. The weather can surely change quickly though, we climbed to the peak at Imogene and inside a ten minute period it went from sunny to "hey look at those clouds on the other mountain" then to "oh, that's lightening" and a little while later "ha ha, check out the hail hitting us!!".
