10 July 2009 :: Lake Placid to Toronto via Niagara Falls (449 miles)

When I set out on my ride from Lake Placid to Toronto I was prepared for a ~270 mile journey, but that turned out to be wishful thinking. I'd not correctly plotted my intended route via Niagara Falls and so I found myself pulling through 450 miles which was really quite a long ride on a KLR650.

Tidbits from the journey:-

  • The town of Lake Placid is bigger and not so quaint as I'd originally thought. Turns out there is a whole other side of town I'd simply missed.
  • I adjusted my front mounted camera from AUTO to 400 since a lot of the shots from the previous day were blurred due to a slow shutter.
  • Most of the photos are boring as hell since they are of a road and not the view and scenery as passing though so I attempted to take shots to the left and to the right which then resulted in nothing much more than shots of road barriers and cars passing by. I thing I'm thus going to stick with shots looking directly ahead from here on since these will be most useful if I'm going to stitch them all together into a sequence as had originally been my intention.
  • I got run off the road by some guy on the I90 at one point, sounds way more serious that it was. The guy saw me decided not to pull out on me, I slowed down until I was sure he was not going to go and then pulled ahead just as he looks at me drifting into my lane. I want to say it was a case of target fixation on his behalf but either way I found myself in the median strip to avoid being taken out by him. In the middle of all this I had someone up my rear end so I was concerned about backing off too fast. Not to worry.
  • Niagara Falls, well it's just a bunch of water going over a cliff. In hindsight I should have taken the time to check it out from the border crossing bridge on foot since it appears this is the best vantage point.
  • All my riding in Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs did not prepare me for the highway driving in Ontario. Drivers here barely leave 3 meters (9ft) between each other while driving at speed. It's totally nuts and scary as hell on a moto but they all do it. I just can't imagine how bad things get here when it gets slippery with snow and ice on the road.
  • I'm taking a day off the bike to visit my sister in Toronto and tomorrow going up North eventually to Sault Ste Marie where I'll cross the border again and head towards Kansas City to stay a few days before treking over to Denver/Bolder and into the mountains.

Have a good ride up North
